Digging around the archives, something which fills me with nothing short of utter delight, brought me face-to-face with this excellent interview with Derek Griffiths. And I didn’t half think that my subscribers would love to take a ganders at it. Conducted back in March 1984 by Michael Leech, in The Stage and Television Today, the interview finds Griffiths coming off the back of a successful theatre run of Aladdin in the UK and Canada.
Whilst Aladdin led to night after night of standing ovations, Griffiths is keen to digress and covers several subjects over the course of the short interview. There’s time to discuss his one-man show, conducted during half-terms and no doubt an absolute treat for the youngsters in attendance. Meanwhile, Griffiths reveals that he’s looking forwards to a busy future. And, finally, he highlights the importance of theatre work, during the early 1980s, in regards to securing television roles.
It’s a charming little interview and captures Griffiths during his pomp - an imperial phase which lasted a good 15 years or so at least - and acts as a fine reminder of the great man’s talent.
